They may not be politically correct but cowhides continue to be a decorating staple, especially in modern interiors—it’s a rare issue of Metropolitan Home that doesn’t include at least one. Trouble is, the skins can be pricey, at least if you buy them retail where they typically run from $400 to $1,000. When Mike and I were in the market for a hide, we scoured the internet for a wholesale dealer and it didn’t take long to find Tandy Leather Factory, a no-frills warehouse in Mississauga loaded with gorgeous, extra-large hides at rock bottom prices. This is where dealers and decorators shop.
Like American Express, at Tandy, membership has its privileges. They’ll sell you a skin for the retail price of $330 but if you buy a $35 wholesale membership, the price plummets to $253; during the Royal Winter Fair in November, Tandy slashes the price to just $200 each. How sweet it is!
Tandy’s high quality South American hides range in size from 50 – 70 sq. feet and come in every colour a cow does, some quite smooth, some with longer hair. Slightly damaged hides (brand marks, scars, cuts) are discounted to $150 if you’ve got an upholstery project up your sleeve. Also worth noting are Tandy’s premium pattern-dyed skins in Zebra, Giraffe or Tiger for $500 retail, $400 wholesale.

Tandy’s prices are good but I also find ebay has great value and selection for these types of rugs. The advantage of Tandy is that you can see and touch the rugs. And of course, no shipping.
