It’s no secret that restaurant supply stores are among the best sources for inexpensive tableware. But if you’re really looking for a deal, my advice is to seek out a restaurant supply shop in your city’s Chinatown. Here in Toronto that means a stop at the massive Tap Phong (360 Spadina Avenue, 416.977.6364) where insiders find the very best buys on tableware of all descriptions.
Mike and I assembled the place setting above for just shy of $18, which is an amazing price for a great looking set of beautifully glazed Japanese storeware. Throw in a set of La Fayette flatware for $12 and you’re ready to lay a pretty spiffy table.
If plain white plates are more your style, fear not; Tap Phong stocks a wide range of snowy ceramics in virtually every shape and size ($1.69 - $18.99). You’ll also find kitchen gadgets and utensils and vases and candles to enhance your dining. What you won’t find is much in the way of customer service but the hunting and gathering is half the fun. I highly recommend this kitchen cornucopia.
