House & Home Shows Off

Lynda Reeves and the Canadian House & Home team have poured their design and decorating talents into an Oakville, Ontario showhouse, the grand prize in this year’s Princess Margaret Hospital Sweepstakes. One extraordinarily lucky winner will claim the house and contents valued at approximately $3.5 million. Talk about sitting pretty!

The beautifully designed home, just off Lakeshore Road, is generously proportioned without being overly ostentatious. Reeves and her team have taken a modern-rustic approach layering texture, pattern and colour over a neutral scheme rooted in soft creams, grays and taupes. Reeves leads a series of video tours on the House & Home website and shares lots of design tips and observations; the home will be featured in the April 2010 issue of H&H.

The 5,665 sq. ft. house is free to tour until November 18 if you’re game for a pleasant fall drive. You’ll be hard-pressed not to pony up for a few tickets after parading through all three floors of quiet luxury. You can’t win if you don’t play!

Hi Chris, I toured the home. It’s a great cause and I commend Linda Reeves for her volunteer contribution if that is what it is. But the design was disappointing. The dormer windows upstairs were the biggest concern. Such amazing views in Oakville should be maximized with high, open ceilings and big windows. Definitely a mistake.

The bathroom doors bumped into the toilettes. Grey in a basement is dull dull dull. The farm photos in the basement were a poor choice and looked cheap. The wall treatment that appeared on most of the walls was not well executed. Colour was lacking throughout. A very similar chandelier was used in the kitchen/dining last year. Why not try something new? In any case, it did not suit the area. Did not like the black iron curtain rods against the white walls at all.

If you feel that my comments about the design are not supportive of the Princess Margaret cancer cause, then please take them off the blog.

Modern and Rustic. I love that combo!
Did you know that my (dream) cottage is modern-rustic?

GOod afternoon. I’m glad that decorating has gone “past” that full is more look. I like the clean lines of modern. No clutter *well, except for a drawer or two*

I really like the new direction of the magazine, which is reflected in the show house. It’s more about what creative young people are doing; less about what rich 50-year-olds with big houses hired designers to do.
