On Saturday, Mike and I got the chance to play tourist in our own town by taking a gallery tour of West Queen West with the inimitable Betty Ann Jordan, a local art writer and flâneur extraordinaire (see livewithculture.ca for the full report). It was a brilliant afternoon. Near the end of our tour we ducked into a brand new pop-up store, The Melissa (1080 Queen Street West) where owner Melissa Levin has loaded in her stock of flea market finds and vintage fabrics and draperies.
The 2D Santa in the window is from the old Simpson’s department store ($125) and the collectible vintage globes are $50 each; the folding tray stand (above left) is $40, the ceramic bamboo umbrella stand is $45 and the plastic fantastic, flower table lamp is $200. I was also taken with the retro map of Canada (below left) $125 and the retail display heads ($75 per pair). The Melissa opened last week and will stay up until sometime in January. (Wednesday and Thursday 12 - 8 pm, Friday and Saturday 12 - 9 pm and Sunday 12 - 6 pm.)
