Mike moved out on Saturday leaving me with what felt like a nearly empty apartment. Of course, it wasn't empty at all, it had been stuffed to the gills before the movers arrived. Fortunately, my dear friends Nicola and Victor dropped in Sunday bearing breakfast and flowers and even more importantly, muscle. I needed help moving the bird's eye maple credenza out of the office and into the living room where it ably filled the vacuum left by the dearly departed Louis XV settee. The room isn't functional at all without a sofa but by God, it looks good.

Mike and I spent yesterday afternoon installing a couple of recent purchases at the new apartment. We've had the amazing chrome table base for a few years but just last week we scored a spectacular marble top on Craigslist for $200. The vivid flatweave rugs were originally joined along the long side to make more of a square (St. Lawrence Market, $100) but we've elected to break them up and use one as a runner in the galley kitchen. It's weird to have the kitchen set up while the adjoining room is a riot of boxes -- the room will be our oasis of promise amid the chaos of the move, inspiring us to make the rest of the place just as exciting.

If you're in Toronto and are free this evening, OCAD is screening koolhaas houselife, a documentary by filmmakers Ila Bêka and Louise Lemoine about the House in Bourdeaux, "a masterpiece of contemporary architecture," designed in 1998 by Rem Koolhaas/OMA. The film's central conceit is to follow the housekeeper and maintenance staff as they conduct their rounds of the building on a normal day.

Among the seven residences featured on this year's Cabbagetown Tour of Homes are a pair of former semi-detached houses now conjoined as 357 Wellesley Street East (above right), and 369 Wellesley Street East, above left, a Victorian-era corner store now graciously converted into a bright, family home. It rained for last year's tour making for a sloppy and humid trek through the cobbled streets but Sunday's weather forecast promises a much finer afternoon.
