Do artists and designers have cooler spaces than the rest of us? Um, yes, as it turns out, at least that’s the conclusion I drew from Design Domestic, a photo exhibit currently up at Toronto’s Design Exchange until August 19. The show presents glimpses of the personal tastes and styles of some well-known Canadian curators and design professionals, people like industrial designer Andrew Jones (no relation), whose dining room is pictured above. Other featured spaces belong to Jason MacIsaac (Ministry of the Interior), Shaun Moore (MADE), Montreal landscape architect Claude Cormier and installation artist An Te Liu (below), among others.

Not long ago, I was at a small dinner party where each of the other guests was the owner of a $1 million-plus property. And there I was moving into a one-bedroom rental apartment. I felt ashamed of my place on the ladder of life, albeit cognizant that there are loads of miserable rich people.
I also happen to be a regular reader of blogs like Midwestern Malaise, If The Lampshade Fits and Arren Williams Design Lab where the owners are presently engaged in swish and expensive renovations of beautiful homes. And here I am trying to settle into a 624-sq. ft. box with zero architectural interest.

This weekend offers Toronto house junkies an opportunity to experience one of the city’s most precious jewels, the quaint, cottage-y neighbourhoods on Algonquin and Ward’s Islands. Dubbed the Toronto Island House and History Tour, the June 13 event has been organized by Grannies in Spirit, a group supporting the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign, a project that has so far raised more than $7 million for African grandmothers and the children in their care. Last Sunday, I was lucky enough to enjoy a preview of three island homes with one of the tour organizers, Paulette Pelletier-Kelly.

On my first mini house tour of Kevin's apartment I couldn't shoot the living room which had become a kind of dumping ground, albeit for fabulous furnishings and objects. Well, after several years of living in the small space, Kevin has finally painted the walls and pulled it all together. "Wow," is all I can say about what he's accomplished with a galley-like space that's just shy of 9" at its widest point.

Mike moved out on Saturday leaving me with what felt like a nearly empty apartment. Of course, it wasn't empty at all, it had been stuffed to the gills before the movers arrived. Fortunately, my dear friends Nicola and Victor dropped in Sunday bearing breakfast and flowers and even more importantly, muscle. I needed help moving the bird's eye maple credenza out of the office and into the living room where it ably filled the vacuum left by the dearly departed Louis XV settee. The room isn't functional at all without a sofa but by God, it looks good.
