The AIDS Committee of Toronto's (ACT) Furniture Bank is always looking for "quality" used furniture to benefit families and individuals coping with HIV and AIDS. Says ACT's Practical Assistance Co-ordinator Patric Kearns, "I always ask potential donors whether their item is something they'd consider picking up if they saw it on a curb. If the answer is yes, then we'll probably be happy to take it."

Art Nouveau never really caught on in North America, which explains why you see so little of it in antique and vintage shops here in Toronto. So imagine my delight at stumbling upon Cool and Unusual Antiques & Curios (105 Danforth Avenue at Broadview), a secret vault of Art Nouveau, Jungendstil and genuine English Arts and Crafts treasures. I call it a secret vault because Cool & Unusual is tucked into a basement beneath a record shop and is only open Saturdays and Sundays from 12 - 5 pm.

I've heard that finding great bunk beds is a lot tougher than it used to be. Toronto's BunkHouse Kids is attracting customers from as far away as Burlington and Hamilton because there are so few other options in this particular niche market. Be warned, however, that taking home a room from BunkHouse will take a significant bite out of your pay packet. This stuff's not cheap! But the quality is good, with Canadian-made, solid wood construction, deep drawers and convenient trundles for those de rigueur sleepovers.

Let's say you're planning a trip to Amsterdam or Barcelona, maybe Copenhagen or Munich; naturally you'll want to check out some of the cooler shops and get a sense of what passes for "vintage" in that part of the world. But how do you find the shops, which are seldom listed in guide books. Dutch website RetroStart.com has just added a new feature called Shop Locator that points you in the right direction.

I was doing some style scouting on the Rosedale decor strip Tuesday when I happened upon the Seatbelt Chair at the fabulous L'Atelier (1224 Yonge Street, 416.966.0200). All staff could tell me was that the chair comes to them from Montreal and is also available in red, black and white. Imagine a seating group with one of each colour? You'd make the cover of Dwell for sure!
