Continuum, a new decor store at Pape and Danforth in Toronto, is not what I expect from a "vintage" shop. For one thing, a lot of the inventory isn't especially old, it just isn't brand new. And much of the stock has been reborn under the fearless direction of store owner Daina Liepa who has a definite knack for updating tired furnishings.

Apparently, not everybody loves Fornasetti as much as I do. When I proposed this piece to Chris, he made a face and said, "Ew, I don't care for Fornasetti at all." Love him or hate him, Pierro Fornasetti (1913-1988) was the most prolific designer of the 20th century. There was a major retrospective of his work at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London in 1991, however, it has only been in the last decade or so that there's been significant commercial interest in his work.

I spotted this poinsettia Christmas tree in the lobby of my dentist's office last week -- isn't it amazing? If red and green are the colours of Christmas then this tree has the season all sewn up. Poinsettias are native to Mexico but they grow wild all over Central and South America. In Brazil, I saw poinsettia trees 40-feet tall! Some folks are suspicious of the potted plants believing them to be poisonous, especially to pets, but my research suggests there's actually nothing toxic about poinsettias.

Apparently, it's sale week here on styleNorth and the Umbra Factory Sale is one of the biggest and best of the season. All you laggards who put off your Xmas shopping until the last minute are about to be rewarded. A little bird told me that among the offerings this Saturday and Sunday at Toronto's Direct Energy Centre will be some choice wallpapers at insanely low prices, as well as some excellent drapery hardware and the rest of Umbra's home accessories and furnishing lines. Selection will, of course, be best on Saturday and the earlier the better. See you in the lineup!

On Saturday Mike and I got the chance to play tourist in our own town by taking a gallery tour of West Queen West with the inimitable Betty Ann Jordan, a local art writer and flâneur extraordinaire. It was a brilliant afternoon. Near the end of our tour we ducked into a brand new pop-up store, The Melissa (1080 Queen Street West) where owner Melissa Levin has loaded in her stock of flea market finds and vintage fabrics and draperies.
