Peppered along Montreal's Notre-Dame West are a handful of decor and design shops that diverge completely from the street's identity as a destination for antiques. Surface Jalouse, Léo Victor, Point Rouge and Viva Galerie all break the traditional mold and reflect the street's inexorable march away from an industrial past toward a residential and very trendy future.

Peter and Elaine aren't Asian but their decor certainly is. The couple has spent the last 30 years filling their beautiful split level home with treasures from around the globe, the Far East in particular. Their aesthetic is 70s modern meets Asian antique (and contemporary) although the 70s are being purged with the help of Craigslist, which is how I came to meet the couple.

It’s no secret that restaurant supply stores are among the best sources for inexpensive tableware. But if you’re really looking for a deal my advice is to seek out a restaurant supply shop in your city’s Chinatown. Here in Toronto that means a stop at the massive Tap Phong (360 Spadina Avenue, 416.977.6364) where insiders find the very best deals on tableware of all descriptions, from plain white in round, square and every shape in between, to Japanese stoneware in a range of luscious patterns and colours.

Toronto is apparently home to the largest expatriate community of Tibetans in the world outside of India and Nepal. One way to support Tibet is to buy Tibetan products and Queen West is a great place to do just that. In the blocks immediately west of Bathurst Street you'll find The Tibet Shoppe (664 Queen Street West, 416.703.8423) and Tibet Arts & Crafts (703 Queen Street West, 416.703.9072), both great sources for Buddhas, prayer wheels, singing bowls, wall hangings, cushions and cabinets.

Garden stools are ubiquitous nowadays, to the point where I'm completely over them. Or so I thought until I passed by Jalan on Toronto's Queen Street West yesterday where this superb, red lacquer stool cast a spell on me. Made of elm, the scalloped, drum shaped stool has a distinctly Art Deco feel while still being decidedly Asian. I'd use the piece as a side table which would add a stunning jolt of colour to any room. And the $250 price tag strikes me as eminently reasonable given the quality and amount of WOW for your money. Truly, I am in love.
