I know you're not supposed to buy art to match your sofa but how about a rug? The minute I saw Scott Young's textural blue photo, left, I knew I had to have it for my kitchen to go with those amazing flat weave carpets of mine. I have no idea which cushions, carpets, runners and blankets Toronto textile artist Bev Hisey will be discounting at her annual Christmas sample sale December 3 - 5 but Bev, if you've got one of those orange, felted wool numbers, above left, put my name on it! Tandy's hair-on hides (32 - 40 square feet) are priced at $240 until October 31, but if you buy a membership you can take one home for just $180 (+ $35 = $215). Elsewhere, hides typically retail for $600 or more.

Roots Home, an offshoot of the Canadian clothing company, has been producing furnishings with a focus on leather chairs and sofas, since 1998. I dropped into the retailer's Castlefield showroom yesterday scouting for Canada Day items and I was not disappointed, especially by their soft furnishings, which unabashedly celebrate the Canadian affection for the great outdoors.
