My IKEA snobbery knows no bounds. The prejudice was brought home to me this morning while surfing Craigslist and clicking through on an ad for the potentially cool lounge chair above ($150); the second I saw it was from IKEA I said, "pass". Nevermind that I'm in the market for a decent lounge chair or that this one happens to reference one of my all-time-favorite designs, the Zurich Leisure chair. My kneejerk reaction is if it's from IKEA, pass.

Sometimes it feels like the universe is trying to send me a message. No sooner had Mike and I digested the fabulousness that is Modern Americana than suddenly on Craigslist this morning come these crazy great pieces on offer from a seller in Oakville, Ontario. The biomorphic shapes and drawer pulls summon the work of a somewhat obscure group of revered 1960s designers like Arthur Espenet Carpenter, Sam Maloof and Jack Rogers Hopkins. A week ago I'd never heard of any of these fellows and this morning I'm trying to figure out how to carve three hours out of my day so I can beat you all to Oakville to score these treasures.

I firmly believe that everything will sell on Craigslist if priced correctly. If I haven't had a bite within a week of posting an item, my price is too high. It really doesn't matter where it came from or how much I paid, the market determines the value of a thing and the only way ascertain that value is to keep dropping your price until someone finally takes the bait. It's a hard lesson, apparently.

The amazing, mid-century modern dining chairs looked terrific in the ad but it wasn't until we got them home that we appreciated just how much work would be involved to renew them. The lacquer was worn revealing a yellowish undercoat, dings needed patching, the foam had completely disintegrated and nearly half the feet were missing. I didn't doubt that they'd be fantastic, I just underestimated what it would take to get them there.

On Craigslist yesterday, I came across these fab 1950s table lamps priced at $120. Such style! I'd buy them in an instant if our house wasn't already heaving with more lamps than we'll ever be able to use. I've currently got six lamps of my own up on Craigslist, two pairs and a couple of singles. I don't need any more lamps. So help me out, buy these. Please. 'Cause if they're still there on Monday morning, well, there's just no telling what I might do.
