Where to Find . . . Oilcloth

While visiting Winkel, Mike and I noticed the shop's fantastic selection of oilcloth on the roll. Now there's a throwback to an earlier age. Oilcloth is a printed canvas, originally treated with linseed oil to make it impermeable and more recently coated with plastic, almost like a vinyl. Because it's so easily cleaned — just wipe and go — oilcloth was used for decades to cover picnic tables and hardworking kitchen tables.

I've already written about some of our favorite Toronto fabric stores — MacFab, Designer Fabrics and Crazy Joe's — all of which have good selection at decent prices. But when Mike and I need fabric for a job, we typically start our search a little lower on the price ladder; then if we strike out, we bump up the hunt and pay retail . . .

I was drawn into the store (Craft, 1172 Yonge Street, 647.435.6869) by the “Moving Sale” signage promising 50 per cent discounts and while the afghani rugs in the main showroom are very nice indeed, it was the tribal, ralli quilts that really caught my eye. With suzanis from Uzbekistan continuing to be red hot accessories, I thought styleNorth readers might also appreciate these colourful handmade blankets from Pakistan’s Sindh province.

Trade Secrets: Crazy Joe’s

An upholsterer I know recommended Crazy Joe’s for inexpensive fabric and when someone in the trade makes a referral, I pay attention. Joe’s tagline is, “if you don’t shop at Crazy Joe’s you pay too much!” With three locations – two in Toronto and one in Mississauga — I figure Joe must be doing something right . . .

Lantern Love: Palmyra Design

You've probably never seen lanterns quite like some of those brought to Canada by Fran Devlin, the intrepid world traveler behind Palmyra Design. When you visit the Palmyra showroom on Derry Road in the lee of the Niagara Escarpment, Fran will ask for a few moments so she can go ahead and light the room. Shortly, she'll beckon you to come around the house — yes, Palmyra's showroom in the lower annex of Fran's home in Milton, Ontario — and enter her magical kingdom of light.
