Among the seven residences featured on this year's Cabbagetown Tour of Homes are a pair of former semi-detached houses now conjoined as 357 Wellesley Street East (above right), and 369 Wellesley Street East, above left, a Victorian-era corner store now graciously converted into a bright, family home. It rained for last year's tour making for a sloppy and humid trek through the cobbled streets but Sunday's weather forecast promises a much finer afternoon.

There were lots of fantastic spaces at this year's JLT Showhouse but the two rooms that stand out most in my mind are Brian Gluckstein's study and Kimberly Seldon's master suite. Gluckstein's room had two main focal points, a luxe Fortuny pendant hung above a chaise in the bay window opposite the doorway (shown in H&H) and an imposing Coromandel screen that anchored the main seating area (above). The space was a study (sorry) in contrasts between dark and light, masculine and feminine.

Like last week's post about old apartment houses, I'm again taking a step outside styleNorth's mandate and indulging my own passion for heritage architecture. On Friday, I was among the lucky few to enjoy one of the final tours of Toronto's "old" Don Jail before it undergoes a lengthy transformation into administrative headquarters for the Bridgepoint Health Foundation. Renowned heritage experts ERA Architects will oversee the restoration of a portion of the original Toronto Jail (its proper name) but it will be years before the public is again permitted inside.

My pals John and Juli at Kitka Design Toronto have been documenting the transformation of a family cottage from sad and tired into a smart, Scandinavian-inspired retreat. Today, the couple revealed the finished result on their blog and it's a stunner! Definitely worth a visit. Congratulations J&J!

Sean and Stephen's home in Toronto's Old Cabbagetown neighbourhood isn't just well done, it's superb! Beautifully styled with a lifetime's worth of fine furnishings, the historic, Queen Ann-style townhouse is spacious yet cozy and beautifully bright. The traditional furnishings are tempered with glorious modern artworks and enough tribal kilims and ikats to balance the silks and toiles. The couple also loves leopard print, which is boldly deployed on the main staircase and used to update a pair of neo-classical side chairs in the dining room.
