I'd forgotten how much I missed Debbie Travis until I lucked into a one-on-one interview with the décor diva Wednesday at Toronto's SOHO Metropolitan Hotel where Canadian Tire had arranged a press day to promote its Christmas 2010 product line. That's right, Christmas! It was hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk but never mind, upstairs in the penthouse a small army of publicists and product demonstrators was taking turns steering junketeers across three floors of ho-ho-holiday vignettes. Talk about surreal.

Not long ago, I was at a small dinner party where each of the other guests was the owner of a $1 million-plus property. And there I was moving into a one-bedroom rental apartment. I felt ashamed of my place on the ladder of life, albeit cognizant that there are loads of miserable rich people.
I also happen to be a regular reader of blogs like Midwestern Malaise, If The Lampshade Fits and Arren Williams Design Lab where the owners are presently engaged in swish and expensive renovations of beautiful homes. And here I am trying to settle into a 624-sq. ft. box with zero architectural interest.

Continuum, a new decor store at Pape and Danforth in Toronto, is not what I expect from a "vintage" shop. For one thing, a lot of the inventory isn't especially old, it just isn't brand new. And much of the stock has been reborn under the fearless direction of store owner Daina Liepa who has a definite knack for updating tired furnishings.

Lynda Reeves and the Canadian House & Home team have poured their design and decorating talents into an Oakville, Ontario showhouse, the grand prize in this year's Princess Margaret Hospital Sweepstakes. One extraordinarily lucky winner will claim the house and contents valued at approximately $3.5 million. Talk about sitting pretty! The 5,665 sq. ft. house is free to tour until November 18 if you're game for a pleasant fall drive.

As a Canadian of Scottish heritage I was looking forward to Homecoming 2009, a 12-month event welcoming back the Scottish diaspora to celebrate Scotland's contributions to the world as well as the 250th anniversary of poet Robert Burns' birth. Although we didn't sample the official Homecoming offerings, we did commemorate in our own way by absorbing the history, grandeur and beauty of Scotland.
