Mike and I spent yesterday afternoon installing a couple of recent purchases at the new apartment. We've had the amazing chrome table base for a few years but just last week we scored a spectacular marble top on Craigslist for $200. The vivid flatweave rugs were originally joined along the long side to make more of a square (St. Lawrence Market, $100) but we've elected to break them up and use one as a runner in the galley kitchen. It's weird to have the kitchen set up while the adjoining room is a riot of boxes -- the room will be our oasis of promise amid the chaos of the move, inspiring us to make the rest of the place just as exciting.

Mike and I finally made it to Toronto's new Anthropologie on Saturday and one of the things that stood out was the tableware, which was pretty enough but more than twice the price of comparable items at Tap Phong restaurant supply on Spadina Avenue. The bowl, above left, at Anthropologie retails for $14; the bowl, above right, at Tap Phong, retails for $5.99; both are made in Japan.

Technology is taking design in myriad new directions especially in kitchens and bathrooms where new surfaces and products are revolutionizing how we use these formerly utilitarian spaces. Keeping up with the latest and greatest can be a full-time job and it is for the pros leading sessions at Designers Walk April 2 – 3 for the launch of Kitchen & Bath Design Month. While a couple of the dozen sessions are aimed at professional designers, most of them will be geared toward consumers and are free to the public, all you have to do is register in advance on the DW website.

I wish I could say that the kitchen became radically different well before Christmas 2008 but I would be lying. Apart from purging the plants, adding cork flooring and purchasing a few odds and ends over the years, we lived with the louvered pine cabinets and a teal green counter top for 10 years! Not the kitchen of someone who should know better.

John Coburn is one of 26 of lucky artists to win a subsidized live/work space in the newly-opened Artscape Wychwood Barns in midtown Toronto. A former TTC switching and repair yard, the “Barns” have been preserved and transformed thanks to years of hard work and millions of dollars of public and private funding.
