I would NEVER pay $123.50 for a shelter book, which is why I'm only now getting to The Private World of Yves Saint Laurent & Pierre Bergé (Vendome Press). I have coveted this title since first seeing it late last year, but only recently did it find its way to my favorite book reseller, Toronto's BMV, where I scooped up a copy for $49. I have yet to find a discounted edition of the Christie's hardcover catalogue from "the sale of the century," The Yves Saint Laurent Pierre Bergé Collection, but a friend has kindly loaned me his copy so I could blog about it here.

A Q&A with Sarah Jessica Parker is one of six stories featured on the cover of the October 2009 issue of Metropolitan Home magazine but turn inside and you'll discover that the "interview" with SJP is a three-inch spit-ball about La Parker's favorite things including her preferences in ice cream, sneakers and sunglasses. The only decor-related bullet reveals that the star's favorite paint colour is geranium red. Wow! I'm glad we let our subscription lapse if this is the best Donna Warner and her team can come up with.

his morning, Apartment Therapy is asking readers whether they hand pick the end books on open shelves. I couldn't resist taking the bait because this is something I carefully consider. I could select titles that tell visitors what refined or adventurous taste I have, but instead I choose my end caps based on colour and pattern. This shelf stands beside a cockpen chair so I've referenced the fretwork with the book jackets and even the reticulated ceramics.

Cheap: The High Cost of Discount Culture

Ruppel Shell is a woman after my own heart; a self-confessed "bargain hunter" who can't resist a steep discount. It was her burgeoning awareness of the gulf between price and value that inspired her to embark on the three years of research and travel that have resulted in Cheap: The High Cost of Discount Culture.
