The worst part of moving is that you can't find anything. I have a favorite photo of our boy Punch taken at a friend's cottage where he is calm and regal and you really get a sense of his size and handsome bearing. But the photo is eluding me this morning, this morning when I can't sleep because the loss of him is still so fresh and raw. Mike and I said goodbye to our happy chappy last night, the cancer had taken too firm a hold of him. So I'm publishing the best shot I can find, taken in one of Punch's favorite places with one of his favorite people, Mike.

Moving is hard on everybody, but it's especially tough on dogs. My Scotties, Punch and Judy, were slow to adapt to my last apartment and no sooner had they settled down than I up and moved them again. D'oh! What seemed to throw the dogs off last time was that all their favorite "spots" were dismantled: I didn't make enough of an effort to recreate the furniture placement of our previous house and so they wandered around looking for a place to get comfortable, to no avail.

Freddie, the tough, little, one-eyed Jack Russel, and Lucy, the more amicable beagle-cross, are but two of the tail-wagging mascots I've come across in my styleNorth travels. My love of dogs is no secret so whenever I'm met by a canine greeter, I put the establishment on a mental list of favorites. Ethel co-owner Greg Perras, says lots of customers stop in just to say to say, "Hi," to the dogs.

The doctor warned us that the medication would make the dog ravenously hungry, we just never imagined he'd start eating the rug. But he did. Quite a lot of it. Now our bright orange flokati rug, the one that won us a place in the Apartment Therapy Colour Contest and Toronto Life magazine, has several circular bald spots, like alopecia in orange wool.

Mike and I have a marvelous pair of Scotties but the truth is, we love ALL dogs, a fact that’s pretty obvious after a short tour of our home. And yet unless you’re watching for it and doing the math, it’s easy enough to overlook the fact that our house is crammed with dog-themed art from paintings and prints to tchotchkes and statuary. As Leonard Cohen says, “There ain’t no cure for love.”
