Upholstery 101: Getting Started

I’ve always wanted to try my hand at upholstery. And while it would probably be great to take a course and get some real hands-on instruction, my work schedule is erratic making evening classes impractical. My answer was to read up on the subject—seven books and counting—and to track down some video instruction.

Celebrity Upholsterer? Now there’s a phrase you don’t hear too often. But Matthew Haly, above, is the real deal, in demand by famous New Yorkers and top decorators like Celerie Kemble. "There's always a line at The Furniture Joint, Haley's bespoke upholstery studio in NYC,” claims the book jacket. And now, thanks to this concise DIY tome, you too can be biscuit tufting and French-stitching in no time.

Heads Up: For the Love of Cloth

I admit I’m a little reluctant to post this item; the more of you who know about For the Love of Cloth, the less fabulous fabric there will be to go around when the Textile Museum of Canada (55 Centre Avenue, Toronto, 416.599.5321) hosts a special fund-raising boutique sale on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 14, 11 am – 5 pm and Nov. 15, 11 am – 1 pm).

Right Now: Carpet as Upholstery

Kilim covered ottomans are hotter than August in Istanbul but the idea of upholstering other furnishings with carpet is also catching on like it's 1799. This past weekend at Toronto's Horsefeather’s Home (1400 Castlefield Ave.) I spotted some handsome and remarkably comfortable Georgian-style library chairs (above centre, $4,388 pair) and wingbacks (below, $5,480 pair), ottomans ($1,575 - $1,837), even a sumptuous pillow covered in carpeting (above left, 20” x 20”, $375).

Coming Around to Kilim

I’ve always found kilim a bit crafty, a little too hippy, but after seeing Vatché’s wares I have completely come around to kilim. Rather than being course and rough, many of Kilim Crafts’ pieces are luxuriously soft. What’s more, there’s a whole variety of kilim that blends traditional flat weave with plush, knotted pile, much like a chenille.
